From the world’s worst card trick to the world’s best?

I have always enjoyed the principle underlying MIRASKILL by Stewart James. Whilst I admit the effect isn’t an incredible one – the principle is durable enough that it is handy when performing under stringent conditions. Borrowed deck, hands being burned and so on… Now – I quite enjoy MIRASKILL – but at the same time…

Reference help – Al Leech trick.

I’ve posted before about an excellent Al Leech trick from “For Card Men Only”. Trying not to give anything away, I was just wondering if anyone knew of an earlier source than Leech (1949) for the method he uses with the sandwich just before removing the selection from the pocket?
